Q: It is reported that Japan said that its government is cool-headed towards the recent collision incident and will continue to handle this according to its domestic law. Japan hoped that China could also remain calm and the two sides could communicate through high-level channels. Do you have any comment?
A: The Diaoyu Islands have been Chinese inherent territory since ancient times. Japan's illegal detention of Chinese fishermen and fishing boat in waters off the Diaoyu Islands and obstinately applying its so-called judicial procedures on the Chinese captain is gross infringement upon and challenge to China's territorial sovereignty, which has aroused strong indignation among the Chinese people and severly damaged China-Japan relations. It is natural that China makes necessary reponses. Japan's excuses hold no water. The only way to refrain from further damage to bilateral relations is that Japan immediately corrects its mistake and let the Chinese captain return unconditionally. There is no way out for any trick aimed to fool people around the world and the public opinion.
Q: It is reported that Japan said it is important to enrich Japan-China strategic relationship of mutual benefit and it will handle the collision incident based on that judgement. Do you have any comment?
A: Japan's illegal detention of Chinese fishermen and fishing boat in waters off the Diaoyu Island and its ensuing acts of escalation have seriously contravened the principle of resolution of issues through dialogue and consultations inscribed in the fourth political document between the two countries as well as the spirit of China-Japan strategic relationship of mutual benefit. If the Japanese side really values its relations with China, it should immediately correct its mistake and let the Chinese captain return unconditionally so as to refrain from further damage to the bilateral relations.
