2011-11-16 12:28

On Nov. 14, 2011, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal H. E. Yang Houlan, attended the seminar on "Emerging Challenges of Nepal Foreign Policy" jointly organized by Institute Of foreign Affairs and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. Mr. Tika Jung Thapa, Executive Director of Institute of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mahat, former Foreign Minister, Mr. Shrestha, former Foreign Secretary, Mr. Bista, expert of foreign policy and Ms. Adhikari, joint secretary of Foreign Ministry were present at the seminar.

In his address, Ambassador Yang stated that the first challenge of Nepal foreign policy was the interaction between its domestic development and foreign policy, and the second was how Nepal could benefit from the rapid development of its two great neighbors. Diplomacy should serve the interests of domestic development. Political stability formed the foundation of a country's diplomacy. He believed that if the peace process and constitution drafting are completed, Nepal would enter a new period of development both in nation building and foreign affairs.

The participants said, Nepal is in the transitional period and its foreign policy is constrained by its political turmoil, weak economic foundation and poor governance. While facilitating the peace process and constitution drafting, Nepal should vigorously develop its cooperation with foreign countries especially with China and India, make efforts in economic diplomacy, deepen regional economic cooperation and realize common development.
