Hon’ble Mrs. Rekha Sharma, Minister of Communication and Information Technology,

Ms. Zou Zhiqiang, Country director of CFRD Nepal Office,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Friends,

Good morning! It’s my pleasure to be amongst the prominent social leaders in food, education and public health area.

On the occasion of launching “Smiling Children School Feeding Program”, we gather together to witness the positive outcomes of China-Nepal cooperation, and pool wisdom to create a better future for children. I am glad to address this event and I wish this seminar a full success.

Children are the future and our hope for a better world. Promoting and protecting their rights is an integral part of the international human rights cause. It’s important to improve legitimate system on the rights of children, stay committed to the best interests of children, give priority to children’s welfare, and protect children’s right to education. We’re happy to see that with great dedication of CFRD, the Smiling Children Program, with a view to providing meals or food to severe malnutrition children in developing countries, has benefited over 100,000 children around the world. In Nepal, the program has also made positive impact in response to the issue of hunger faced by children in poverty-stricken areas.

China has taken an active part in international cooperation and work for greater progress in the global cause to improve children’s well-being. In 2021, President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Development Initiative, aiming at building a global community of development. China has scaled up inputs into GDI’s implementation. The Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund has been put in place to support GDI cooperation projects. Among the first-batch projects of GDI project pool, China has launched 50 practical cooperation projects in assisting poverty alleviation, food security, community building, public health and so on. The Smiling Children Program was one of those projects and a vivid illustration of China’s firm commitment to help Nepal to implement the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

As a friendly neighbor and reliable development partner, China will continue to carry out health care program targeting the demand of impoverished groups, and education program to block the intergenerational transmission of poverty. We’ll also work with Nepal government to provide assistance on physical infrastructure, economic recovery, and clean energy, so as to enhance the resilience of impoverished communities against disease and natural disaster. More programs should be developed in innovative manner, and we will encourage and support non-governmental organizations from both countries in enhancing exchanges and cooperation to bring out tangible benefits to the two peoples.

On the path of development, no country or individual should be left behind. This is the aspiration of the GDI. China will continue to share development opportunities with Nepal to achieve common progress, and make all-out efforts to advance the GDI. We wish more children will get benefit from China-Nepal cooperation and become the successor of our traditional friendship.

Thank you!
